Baby born on Royal Brunei Airlines flight

Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) Flight BI008 from Dubai, initially flying with 173 passengers, landed in Bandar Seri Begawan on 16 June 2022 with an unexpected additional passenger. A healthy baby boy was born seven (7) weeks early at 12:00 PM (GMT+8) en route to Brunei.

Dr Mulfi Ibrahim Alkhinjar, a guest onboard the flight, volunteered to assist with the delivery alongside Cabin Service Officer Romzi Haji Mohamad Yusof and Cabin Crew Siti Nurhafizzah Metassan.

On the experience, Dr Alkhinjar said, “When we delivered the baby, that was when I realised – I just delivered a baby in the skies, and when I held him, I felt very proud and honoured to have helped bring another person to life. The head crew member Romzi was very organised and helpful, and the staff seemed very well trained for these types of situations. They acted and responded accordingly with the proper measures, it was a smooth experience because of their assistance”

Cabin Service Officer, Romzi Haji Mohamad Yusof said “We initially thought she was having regular stomach pain, but when Mrs Josoy showed us her health certificate which shows she is 33 weeks pregnant, that was when we realized she was in labour. This is the second time for me to assist with a baby delivery onboard, that previous experience truly helped me get organized very quickly for this situation to identify a doctor onboard. Siti Nurhafizzah was also extremely helpful with comforting the mother throughout the entire journey”

“Our award-winning cabin crew are very well trained to handle various scenarios that may occur

during a flight, and I am extremely proud of the professionalism displayed by the team in handling this unique experience onboard. We are also extremely lucky to have Dr Mulfi Ibrahim Alkhinjar onboard the flight who selflessly lent his expertise to assist with the baby’s delivery. We are pleased to share that both Mrs Josoy and her newborn son are in safe hands, and we wish them a speedy recovery” said Acting Chief Executive Officer, Captain Sabirin Hj Abd Hamid.

RB would like to remind the public that RB’s policy on pregnant guests from 28 weeks up to 36 weeks of pregnancy requires a fit-to-fly letter from the doctor, valid one week from the date of flight.

RB is currently nominated in three (03) categories for the Asia sub-region of the 29th World Travel Awards, namely, Asia’s Leading Airline, Asia’s Leading Airline – Business Class and Asia’s Leading Cabin Crew. Voting is still open from now until 31 August 2022 at www.flyrb.com/votenow.
