Carlos Yulo showed resilience after an early setback to secure a respectable 12th place in the men's artistic gymnastics individual all-around finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, held at Bercy Arena on Wednesday (early Thursday in Manila).
The Filipino gymnast had a challenging start, stumbling during his dismount from the pommel horse in the first rotation, which resulted in a score of just 11.900. However, he quickly recovered in the subsequent rotations. Yulo scored 13.933 in the rings and an impressive 14.766 in the vault, one of his strongest events.
He continued to perform well, earning 14.500 in the parallel bars, 13.600 in the horizontal bar, and concluding with a 14.333 in the floor exercise, bringing his total score to 83.032.
Yulo's final score was 3.800 points behind the gold medalist Oka Shinnosuke of Japan, who finished with a total of 86.832. China's Zhang Boheng and Xiao Ruoteng secured the silver and bronze medals with scores of 86.599 and 86.364, respectively.
The competition saw a dramatic conclusion as Zhang attempted to surpass Oka with his performance on the horizontal bar but fell short with a score of 14.633. Oka's victory was a redemption for Japan after the defending champion Daiki Hashimoto placed sixth.
Despite missing a podium finish, Yulo's performance builds anticipation for his upcoming events in the floor exercise final on August 3 and the vault final on August 4.
