Filipina Tennis Star Alex Eala Breaks Into WTA Top 75 for the First Time

Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala has smashed her way into the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Top 75, leaping an incredible 65 spots after a headline-making run at the 2025 Miami Open.

The 19-year-old wildcard stunned the tennis world by reaching the semifinal of the prestigious WTA 1000 event—defeating three Grand Slam champions along the way, including world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in straight sets. This marked her biggest career win to date and made her the first Filipino ever to reach the Final Four of a WTA 1000 tournament.

Eala also upset world No. 5 Madison Keys and 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko before advancing to the quarterfinals after Paula Badosa withdrew due to injury.

Her Cinderella run ended in a tight semifinal battle against world No. 4 and home favorite Jessica Pegula, but the feat was more than enough to rocket her from 140th to 75th in the latest WTA rankings.

“New doors have opened, but so have new challenges. The real work begins now,” Eala shared on Instagram.
