Several Filipinos were taken into custody in Qatar on Friday, March 28, following alleged involvement in unauthorized political demonstrations, the Philippine Embassy in Doha confirmed.

In a statement, the embassy said it is coordinating with Qatari authorities to extend consular support to those detained. While details remain scarce, the incident reportedly occurred as some Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) held simultaneous gatherings to celebrate former President Rodrigo Duterte’s 80th birthday.

The embassy previously reminded the Filipino community to abide by Qatar’s strict regulations on public demonstrations.

The detentions come amid heightened activity from Duterte supporters abroad, who also launched a “zero remittance week” to express solidarity with the former president, who is currently facing trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) over his administration’s controversial anti-drug campaign.

Duterte was arrested earlier this month in the Philippines and remains detained, with a confirmation of charges hearing set for September 23.
