PBC Dubai & Northern Emirates Launches Arté Pilipinas

An initiative by the Philippine Business Council - Dubai and Northern Emirates (PBC-DNE) in collaboration with the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai and the Department of Trade and Industry, Arté Pilipinas is a four-day art festival that will bring emerging and established Filipino artists and creatives in the UAE to an international audience.

1. Based on the UAE’s thrust to celebrate and highlight its diverse expatriate communities, Arté Pilipinas aims to pioneer an ambitious cross-cultural exchange between the Filipino, the Emirati and other communities in the UAE.

2. UAE-based Filipino designers, architects, artists and other creatives are invited to submit their info and portfolios by October 15, 2019.

3. An internationally renowned curator from the Philippines will select and assist the exhibiting artists.

The Philippine Business Council - Dubai & Northern Emirates (PBC-DNE) announces the start of open-call for participants for Arté Pilipinas, a four-day community art festival showcasing arts and cultural production from the Philippines. UAE-based Filipino designers, architects, dancers, singers, artists, and other creatives are invited to take part by submitting their portfolios through the website www.artepilipinas.com, by October 15, 2019.

Mark Barretto (b. Philippines 1979) currently lives in Dubai, UAE. In 2016, his work was presented in ART DUBAI, a leading international art fair in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia under the Marker Programme. He is one of the headliners for SIKKA Art Fair 2017 and 2018, an initiative by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. Mark was also invited to Sasaran International Art Festival 2017 in Malaysia. Most recently, he is one of the exhibiting artists at the Clubhouse - HKwalls Festival 2019 in Hong Kong.

The main sections of the festival will focus on a contemporary art exhibition, talks programme, and cultural performances. The Arté Pilipinas contemporary art exhibition aims to be an opportunity for UAE-based artists to showcase their artwork to a regional and international audience and will feature a range of artistic media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film, and installations.

An internationally renowned curator from the Philippines will select and announce the exhibiting artists on November 17, 2019. These artists can exhibit and sell works created within the last year or conceived specifically for the exhibition.

“Why Arté Pilipinas? To create a celebratory platform that sheds light on the many talents of the Filipino diaspora in the UAE. As a working migrant population, it can sometimes be convenient to generalise the Filipino identity as linked to career development. Arté Pilipinas, in turn, aims to nurture a nuanced narrative by showcasing and celebrating UAE-based Filipino talent working across various mediums including art, photography, film, food, dance and performance. The exhibition's programme acts as a point of discovery for other communities in the UAE to encourage diverse dialogue and cross-cultural exchange,” says Bobbie Carella, Chairman of the Philippine Business Council - Dubai and Northern Emirates and Director of Arté Pilipinas.

“This PBC initiative brings together previously thought unparallel lines of arts and economics. Arté Pilipinas is an endeavor that seeks to create an awareness of the nexus between creativity and business. Our heritage cannot just be a matter of the ethereal and beauty but just as how the rest of the world capitalizes on their arts, ours is also a matter of economic pride,” says Paul Raymund Cortes, PCG Consul General.

Adds Leo Barrameda, Project Head of Arté Pilipinas, “The time has come for UAE-based Filipino artists to take center stage. We know that there are so many talented Filipinos in the UAE but are not given the right spotlight and opportunities. Arté Pilipinas will be the start of extensive Filipino art activation in the UAE and exciting collaborations among Filipino artists and other expat communities.”
